Director of Public Health Annual Report 2025/26

This year’s annual report is focused on healthy ageing.  Ageing is more than simply getting older, and it is not just down to our genes. Crucially, healthspan is as important as lifespan.  We want people in Torbay to live as long as possible in good health, able to do the things that bring us joy.  For all of us as individuals, thinking about how we can age healthily can help us to prevent illness and disability, remain independent, and improve our overall quality of life.   For organisations, employers and communities, there are things we can do to enable our residents to stay active and connected, prepare for healthy ageing, and promote age-friendly environments.

Our Partners

Collaborating closely with key partners in Torbay, including the NHS Trust, community groups and organisations, NHS Devon Integrated Care Board, GPs, pharmacies, and residents, to enhance the health and well-being of the community is key to improving local outcomes.

Our Vision

The public health team’s vision for Torbay is to create an environment that promotes good mental and physical health for everyone, with a mission to improve health outcomes and tackle the root causes of poor health. This is achieved through understanding the local population, addressing factors like housing, education, and income, and focusing on health promotion, prevention, and fairness, especially for those most in need. Torbay faces significant challenges, including high levels of poverty, stark health inequalities, high rates of loneliness, a national outlier status for suicide and self-harm, rising chronic illness rates, obesity, and elevated levels of violent crime and domestic abuse.
